OPL2 is still better; that's how the developers intended it.

Not really. It wouldn’t have midi support if it was designed for the FM chips. The game was written in midi, but if you didn’t have a midi output device it would play the sound back as OPL2. Besides, if that’s how the devs intended it, how come the Steam release of The Ultimate Doom is set to the midi version by default?
